Sheriff and the Deputy at the Thompson Street Medicine Show (credit: CBS2) The show is just one of the unusual offerings at the shop, opened in 1994 by pharmacist Gary Alony. He and his wife Jolie have built their health store into a neighborhood hangout, where visitors greet them by name—Gary is called the “Medicine Man,” and Jolie is “Mama J.”

plays music at Thompson Chemists every 2nd, 4th, and 5th Tuesday of every month. It’s at 132 Thompson Street between Houston and Prince. Yes, it’s a complicated schedule. The postcards we give out have the dates on the back, so take one home with ya and never miss a show! Next one is on Tuesday July 9, 7-9pm! In the meantime, stop by the pharmacy and say hi to Gary and Jolie and all the fine folks there! It’s a magical place!

On concert nights — every second, fourth and fifth Tuesday of the month — ….. That’s where Sheriff Bob and Deputy Kat, plus about five other musicians, set up. They drift in at about 6:45 p.m., Captain Bob on guitar and vocals, Matt Quinones on bass, Michael Donovan on violin, occasionally Trip Henderson on harmonica, Jeffrey Rowland on mandolin. Phyllis Elkind and Emma Turoff sometimes appear on guitar and mandolin, respectively.
